If you had a blood transfusion before 1996, there’s a small chance that you may have been given infected blood. This could mean you were infected with hepatitis C.
Today, all blood donated in the UK is screen using rigorous safety standards and testing to protect both donors and patients.
Since screening was introduced, the risk of getting an infection from a blood transfusion or blood products is very low.

If you think you may have received a blood transfusion prior to 1996 and you have not subsequently been tested for hepatitis C, then you can order a free self-test kit for use at home.
Order a Hepatitis C home blood test
After returning your test you will be contacted with your result within 2 weeks. If you test positive, an NHS healthcare professional will call you to discuss the result.
If you have hepatitis C, an NHS healthcare professional will hep you get treatment to cure it.
